Zurich International School runs a very successfull Roots & Shoots club with 4th and 5th graders, who do projects to help people, animals and the environment:

In the 2024/25 schoolyear, the club ran their «Trash in our Boots» campaign, aimed at raising awareness about the amount of litter left behind in the playgrounds and encouraging students to clean up after recess. They organized monthly playground clean-ups, and  ended the campaign by opening a shop during Sports Day, where they sold beeswax wraps, bookmarks, and origami flowers to raise money for the environment.

After the success of our “Trash in Our Boots” campaign, the students used the funds they raised in the 2025/26 schoolyear to purchase two birdhouses and two birdfeeders. With the support from our facilities team, we installed them in our school’s edible garden.

In addition to the installation, our Roots & Shoots members designed informative posters to guide our school community on how to behave respectfully around the birdhouses and feeders. These posters are now displayed in the garden alongside the installations.

The students have also taken responsibility for the ongoing care of the feeders. Each week, they check on them and refill them as needed. They are incredibly proud of the stewardship role they are developing, and it has become a meaningful part of their routine. Well done!
